    We’re herrings, you and I.
    You always were the faster one.

    I would struggle while you,
    you had the world
    leagues behind you.

    You always hated me for that.

    You say it is for lack of skill,
    for I am feeble
    and bred for bait -
    a bane, a breathing travesty;

    I am fated to die,
    and die alone,
    to be eaten alive by bigger fish.

    Fish like you.

    Yet,
    I remember when we used to swim together -
    Fight every single line and tether,
    Seek all of heaven against the nether,
    Find rhyme and color in shades of heather,
    Move in rhythm to the beats of weather,

    but not anymore.

    You ate me alive.
